Disclination Asymmetry in Deformable Hexatic Membranes and the Kosterlitz-Thouless Transitions

چکیده

A disclination in a hexatic membrane favors the development of Gaussian curvature localized near its core. The resulting global structure of the membrane has mean curvature, which is disfavored by curvature energy. Thus a membrane with an isolated disclination undergoes a buckling transition from a flat to a buckled state as the ratio κ/KA of the bending rigidity κ to the hexatic rigidity KA is decreased. In this paper we calculate the buckling transition and the energy of both a positive and a negative disclination. A negative disclination has a larger energy and a smaller critical value of κ/KA at buckling than does a positive disclination. We use our results to obtain a crude estimate of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature in a membrane. This estimate is higher than the transition temperature recently obtained by the authors in a renormalization calculation. PACS numbers: 05.70.Jk, 68.10.-m, 87.22.Bt Typeset using REVTEX 1

Critical slowing down near the smectic-A-hexatic-B transition

2014 We have performed high-resolution heat-capacity and thermal-conductivity investigations on the same sample in the vicinity of the smectic-A-hexatic-B transition of n-propyl-4’-nheptyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate (370BC). The thermal diffusivity shows a pronounced drop near the transition. This clearly demonstrates and confirms the critical slowing down of the thermal fluctuations observed in ...

Frank's constant in the hexatic phase.

Using videomicroscopy data of a two-dimensional colloidal system the bond-order correlation function G{6} is calculated and used to determine both the orientational correlation length xi{6} in the liquid phase and the modulus of orientational stiffness, Frank's constant F{A}, in the hexatic phase. The latter is an anisotropic fluid phase between the crystalline and the isotropic liquid phase. F...

Kosterlitz-Thouless Transitions on Fluctuating Surfaces

We investigate the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for hexatic order on a free fluctuating membrane and derive both a Coulomb gas and a sine-Gordon Hamiltonian to describe it. In the former, both disclinations and Gaussian curvature contribute to the charge density. In the latter, there is a linear coupling between a scalar field and the Gaussian curvature. We derive renormalization group recurs...

The Kosterlitz-Thouless Transitions on Fluctuating Surface of Genus Zero

We investigate the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for hexatic order on a fluctuating spherical surface of genus zero and derive a Coulomb gas Hamiltonian to describe it. In the Coulomb gas Hamiltonian, charge densities arises from disclinations and from Gaussian curvature. There is an interaction coupling the difference between these two densities, whose strength is determined by the hexatic ri...

Existence of a hexatic phase in porous media.

Molecular simulations for simple fluids in narrow slit-shaped carbon pores exhibit crystal-hexatic and hexatic-liquid transitions that are consistent with Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory. The temperature range over which the hexatic phase is stable is dramatically widened under confinement. Remarkably, the transitions, which are continuous for a single adsorbed layer, become we...
